Sunday Homily - 7.8.2011

7. 8. 2011

img_1505.jpgTwelve years ago, I had the opportunity to study in Italy for two years. Every Sunday evening I traveled by ship to Naples and every Friday I was coming back to the Island of Ischia. I travelled by a ferry big enough for a thousand people and more than a hundred cars. When the wind blew, very often we felt its force.

Moses sent twelve men to examine the land of Canaan. Upon their return they reported what they saw there. However, only Joshua and Caleb delivered an encouraging message. They are the only ones who remembered the power and strength and promises of God. The other men saw only barriers that came with eerily huge dimensions.

wisdom.jpegIn Slovakia, we have a very popular story about the Goldfish. One fisherman caught an unusual catch - a Goldfish. The Goldfish promises him that, if the fisherman drops it back into the sea, the Goldfish will grant him three wishes. There are different versions of what the fisherman wished for - beauty, wealth, happiness, health. But the story ends every time, that the fisherman wishes to go back to his early life. Maybe we would like to catch a goldfish to fulfill some secret wish of ours.

When Jesus was crucified, Mary Magdalene had survived much in her life. Jesus freed her from seven demons and she became his disciple. She supported him financially and she followed him wherever he went and preached the Gospel (Lc 8:1-3). She was one of those who stood by the cross of Jesus at his death. But after Jesus' resurrection, Mary Magdalene forgot Jesus´ promise that he would rise again. Although her love remained unyielding, her faith and hope were shaky.

How faithful God is! Forty years he gave the Israelites bread from heaven. Every morning when they woke up, they found manna in the desert - enough for all. Before Saturday, God gave them as much again, so they did not have to work on Saturdays. Imagine how exciting it was for the children of Israel. They trusted that God would look after them!

If we are fond of someone, we have certain things which remind us of him, when he is not present. For example: a photo in our wallet; a restaurant where you ate together; or a movie which you watched together; a favorite song that you both liked. But what would you prefer: the memories or the man standing next to you?

One of the Slovak bands (Desmod) sings the song with these words:
When it is raining,
the soul of the people
becomes clean.
And the singer continues:
This I like. I fulfilled a dream.
I understand everything.
I am not looking for anything more.

"This month will stand at the head of your calendar; you will reckon it the first month of the year" (Ex 12, 2). You can imagine how important for the Jewish people the feast of Passover was and still is. It is so important for their identity that they incorporated it into their calendar.

In the flaming bush Moses met face to face with God - and God gave to him the mission for his life: "I will send you to Pharaoh to lead my people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt!" (Ex 3, 10).

When I was studying at the university, I was admiring how every lecture fits logically into others. When a lecturer began his lecture, usually he followed what he said in a previous lecture. And he developed what I already knew. It was nice.
