Homily - 6.7.2011

6. 7. 2011

Jesus sends his disciples on their first missionary journey. He orders them to go "to the lost sheep of the house of Israel" (Mt 10: 5-6). Why? The first reason is that salvation is for the Chosen people of Israel!

But Jesus has another reason. It is a better way for disciples to learn to proclaim the Gospel, to start with their brothers and sisters in faith. The disciples grew up in the same religious tradition. They know where to start. They don´t start to proclaim the Gospel in a hostile place – where there are pagan religions and philosophies. Therefore, when they teach the Gospel, they can teach the essence of the Gospel to their brothers and sisters in faith. Jesus Christ calls us also to proclaim the Gospel. The best place to start is in our families and communities, among people whom we know. St. Paul notes that God wants the best for everyone - "but especially those who belong to the family of the faith." (Gal 6:10). There is the most important mission for us like the mission in a faraway land: proclaim the Gospel among those with whom we live. If we don´t bring the Gospel to our families, who will bring it? If our neighbors do not see Christ in us, where do they see Christ?

Lord Jesus, help me to explore opportunities for proclaiming the Gospel. Give me the necessary grace by which I am able to love those who are close to me.
